Serena Williams Lends Support to Meghan Markle After Explosive Oprah Interview

Tennis superstar Serena Williams has lent her support to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry following their explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey. The former world number one took to Twitter to release a powerful statement praising her “selfless friend” Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex and added she teaches Serena “what it means to be truly noble”.

She added on Twitter: “Her words illustrate the pain and cruelty she’s experienced.

“I know first hand the sexism and racism institutions and the media use to vilify women and people of colour to minimise us, to break us down and demonise us. We must recognise our obligation to decry malicious, unfounded gossip and tabloid journalism. The mental health consequences of systemic oppression and victimisation are devastating, isolating and all too often lethal.

“I want Meghan’s daughter, my daughter and your daughter to live in a society that is driven by respect.

“Keep in your memory the fruitage of the spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faith, mildness, self-control. Against such things, there is no law.”

In the two-hour special interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan Markle opened up on the reports of her tiff with Prince William’s wife Kate Middleton. A few UK tabloids had reported that prior to Markle’s wedding there was an altercation between the two which left Kate Middleton in tear. Markle however said that it happened the other way around. “A few days before the wedding [Kate] was upset about the flower girl dresses and it made me cry,” she said.

During the interview, Meghan revealed how baby Archie, before he was born, raised concerns among the royals of how dark skin he will be and whether they will consider making him a prince. Without naming anyone, Meghan said royals had “concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he is born.”

The ‘Suits’ actor also revealed she had “suicidal thoughts” during her time at Buckingham. ‘That was a very clear and real and frightening thought… I couldn’t be left alone.”

Drawing parallels of their time at Buckingham Palace, to that of their mother, Prince Harry said, “I can’t begin to imagine what it must have been like for her, going through this process by herself, all those years ago.”
